A faulty diverter valve can leave a combi boiler producing lukewarm water, heating radiators when you only want to run a tap, or changing temperature without warning. These symptoms are often linked to the valve or its actuator, rather than a problem with the tap itself.
This guide explains what the diverter valve does, the signs of a fault and the safe checks you can make before arranging a professional boiler repair.
What does a combi boiler diverter valve do?
A diverter valve controls where heat from the boiler goes. When you turn on a hot tap, it should direct heated water towards the domestic hot water system. When there is no hot water demand, it can allow heat to circulate through the radiators instead.
In simple terms, the valve switches priority between hot water and central heating. If it sticks, moves only part-way or fails to receive the correct electrical signal, the boiler may struggle to provide hot water at the temperature you expect.
Common diverter valve symptoms
Radiators become hot when a tap is running
One of the clearest signs is radiator warmth while you are running a hot tap. A small amount of warmth can sometimes be normal during boiler operation, but radiators becoming noticeably hot may indicate that the valve is allowing heat into the heating circuit instead of keeping priority on domestic hot water.
Water stays lukewarm
If the tap runs but the water never becomes properly hot, the diverter valve may not be moving fully into the hot water position. Other faults can cause this symptom too, so an engineer will normally test the valve alongside the boiler’s sensors, flow rate and heat exchanger.
Hot water turns warm, then cold
Hot water that starts well and then goes cold can occur when a sticking valve changes position during demand. It may also cause the boiler to stop and restart as it struggles to detect or maintain the correct flow through the hot water circuit.
Temperature changes when demand starts or stops
Noticeable changes when another tap opens, closes or the heating starts can point towards a valve that is not switching cleanly. You may find that the water temperature fluctuates, or that the boiler behaves differently depending on whether the radiators are already calling for heat.
Clicking or whirring near the valve
Unusual clicking, buzzing or whirring from inside the boiler may come from the diverter valve actuator, which is the motorised part that moves the valve. Do not remove the boiler case to investigate, as internal components can be dangerous even when the boiler appears to be switched off.
Safe checks you can make
You can gather useful information without dismantling the boiler or attempting a repair. Make a note of what happens when the fault occurs, as this can help a qualified engineer diagnose the problem more quickly.
Run a hot tap for several minutes and carefully check whether the radiators become warm.
Look at the boiler display to see whether the domestic hot water symbol appears when the tap is opened.
Check the pressure gauge or display against the boiler’s recommended range, often around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold.
If there is no leak or obvious danger, try resetting the boiler once according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
A single reset may clear a temporary control fault, but repeated lockouts are not something to keep resetting. If the boiler continues to shut down, shows an error code or you notice water leaking from the appliance, switch it off if safe to do so and contact a Gas Safe registered engineer.
What an engineer may do
An engineer will first confirm that the symptoms are consistent with a diverter valve fault and rule out other causes, such as low pressure, a faulty sensor, restricted water flow or a problem with the heat exchanger.
Depending on the boiler model, they may test the actuator, check the microswitch that confirms the valve position, and inspect the valve mechanism. A cartridge may be cleaned if it is dirty or sticking, although some models require a replacement cartridge or complete valve assembly.
The correct solution depends on the design and condition of the part. A professional should also check for leaks and test the boiler after the work is complete.
Can a diverter valve be repaired or replaced?
Can it be repaired?
Sometimes. If the actuator or microswitch is faulty, that individual component may be replaceable. In other cases, cleaning the cartridge can restore movement, but this is only suitable when the valve is otherwise in good condition.
Does the whole valve need replacing?
Not always. If the cartridge, seals or valve body are worn, a replacement part may be the more reliable option. The available repair depends on the boiler manufacturer, model and the condition of the existing valve, so an engineer should assess it rather than replacing parts by guesswork.
