Quick checks before you call an engineer

There are a few simple, safe checks most homeowners can do without opening the boiler casing or touching gas components. These checks will not fix deeper problems, but they can give useful clues.

  • Note the error code or flashing lights exactly as shown

  • Check the pressure gauge when the system is cold (usually 1.0 to 1.5 bar is normal)

  • Listen for gurgling, banging or whistling noises when it tries to run

If the pressure keeps dropping within 48 hours

What this points to: Low system pressure, often due to a water leak somewhere in the heating system or a fault in the expansion vessel or safety valve.

Safe checks you can do: With the heating off and the system cool, look at the pressure gauge on the boiler. Note the reading. Top up the pressure only if you know how and your manual says it is safe, then note the new reading and the time.

If the gauge has fallen again within 24 to 48 hours, especially without you bleeding radiators, a leak or internal fault is likely.

What not to do: Do not keep topping up day after day. Constantly adding fresh water can cause corrosion and sludge, and you are masking a problem the engineer needs to see.

What to tell the engineer: Explain how often you are topping up, the pressure readings you saw, and any wet patches you have noticed near radiators, pipes, or the copper pipe that points outside from the boiler (the discharge pipe).

If lockouts follow very cold nights

What this points to: A blocked or frozen condensate pipe, especially on modern condensing boilers with white plastic waste pipes running outside.

Safe checks you can do: Find the plastic condensate pipe, usually leading from the boiler to a drain. In freezing weather, look and feel for obvious ice or a rock solid section. Listen to the boiler trying to start; it may rumble for a few seconds then lock out.

If your manual allows it, you may be able to gently thaw an external pipe with warm (not boiling) water poured over it or a warm cloth held around it.

What not to do: Do not use a blowtorch, kettle water or force anything into the pipe. Do not open the boiler casing.

What to tell the engineer: Say that the lockouts happen mainly on very cold mornings, mention anything you saw on the condensate pipe, and note any gurgling or draining noises near the time of lockout.

If radiators are cold at the bottom or noisy

What this points to: Circulation problems from sludge or trapped air. The boiler may overheat or detect poor flow and lock out to protect itself.

Safe checks you can do: When the heating is on, carefully feel your radiators. Note if they are hot at the top and cold at the bottom, or if some never get properly hot. Listen for banging, kettling or trickling sounds from the boiler or pipework.

You can bleed radiators if you feel confident, but always check the pressure afterwards, as bleeding lowers the system pressure.

What not to do: Do not keep resetting a boiler that is clearly overheating or very noisy. Do not add any chemicals yourself unless advised, as the wrong product or dose can cause damage.

What to tell the engineer: Describe which radiators stay cold at the bottom, any rooms that never heat properly, and any recent work such as new radiators fitted. Mention if the boiler has been getting noisier over time.

If your engineer suggests a system clean or powerflush, ask them to explain how bad the sludge is and how they will protect the boiler and components.

If you hear the boiler trying to light but it fails

What this points to: Ignition or flame detection issues. The boiler tries to fire, then cuts out when it does not sense a stable flame.
