Do I turn my heating off when I go on holiday?

Going on holiday should be a time for relaxation and enjoyment only- with no worries about what is happening at home. One worry that people are often left with is what you should do with your heating. If you keep it on are you wasting money for no reason? But if you switch it off are you more likely to come home to burst pipe or leak? We have answered all your worries in a handy guide.

Are you going on holiday in the summer months?

If you are going on holiday in the warmer part of the year, just keep your heating turned off. If you wouldn't normally have it turned on when you're home, you don't need it on when you are away. The warm weather will keep your home free from any frozen or burst pipes, so you have nothing to worry about!

Or in the wintertime?

Winter holidays are when it can become slightly more difficult to know what to do. We recommend you keep it turned on though, as this will reduce the risks of anything going wrong while you are away. Not only will this keep your home free from any burst or frozen pipes, but it also means you won't be returning to an icy cold home after a nice sunny holiday. While we recommend you leave it on, it doesn't have to be turned up as high as normal and leaving it around 16 degrees is definitely warm enough. This means your energy bills won't be as high as normal for this period, so you won't feel like you are throwing a load of money away.

Is it safe to leave your boiler on?

To put it simply, the chances of anything occurring while you are away is low. We know you may be worried about returning to a home full of dangerous fumes- but it is extremely likely that this will not happen. For extra peace of mind, you can get your boiler serviced before you go away, to make sure there are no weak spots or potential gas leaks to worry about. This also sets you up for annual boiler servicing, which is recommended regardless of whether you are going away or not.
