Does a New Boiler Help Reduce Your Carbon Footprint?

With the damage to our planet from CO2 emissions already catastrophic, it is clear we all need to do something before it’s too late. Being more aware of the energy we use and taking steps to reduce the amount of carbon we are responsible for creating can truly make a difference to the health of our world, although we know it can feel difficult to know where to start.

As part of the bid to reduce energy and help the planet, there are a number of things we can do: from eating less meat through to driving electric cars. One of the biggest ways to reduce fossil fuel use is by tackling the energy we use at home. Homeowners can prevent up to 1.92 tonnes of CO2 being released into the atmosphere every year, individually, showing the power every home can have on limiting the energy crisis.

Here at Bog Standard Plumbing and Heating, we explain more about why this is the case, and how a new boiler can make a big difference to both your home and to the world.

Energy use at home

A lot of energy use is by force a habit. We get used to leaving lights on or setting the heating and hot water to come on twice a day even if we aren’t going to be in or don’t need a shower morning and night. While we all need energy to live comfortably, if we stop wasting it we can make a difference straight away to the amount of CO2 emissions.

However, we only have so much power with this, as the appliances in our home may not always be energy-efficient, so even if we cut down on how we use them they may still be using excess energy. A good example of this is older models of appliances in our homes like our washing machine or dishwasher. Newer appliances are now usually A-rated for energy, meaning they’re designed to work efficiently and use less water and power than older models. So to truly make a difference to your carbon footprint, upgrading to energy-efficient appliances is likely to have the most impact.

Ways a new boiler reduces your own carbon footprint

Your boiler is the item in your home that requires the most energy and produces the most CO2 emissions. In a similar way to other home appliances, newer models of boilers are designed to be vastly more efficient, often working at up to 90% efficiency.

In real terms, this means your new boiler will produce the same amount of heat and hot water but use a lot less energy to do so. This reduces harmful emissions, and also saves you money as you won’t need the same amount of energy as before and your heating bill will be lower.

Reports from The Energy Saving Trust supports energy-efficient boilers, stating that if all of the UK changed to an A-rated condensing boiler and tried to be more careful with their energy use, we’d produce around 6.7 million less tonnes of CO2. This goes to show that if we all shoulder some of the responsibility, we can make a big difference together.

If you want to take steps to reduce your energy use straight away, you can turn your thermostat down a degree or two, have slightly shorter showers and get a Smart meter installed so you can better monitor your use.
