How to Bleed a Radiator?

Simply put, bleeding radiators is when you release air that has become trapped inside. What are the results? Well, it should essentially improve the efficiency of the heating system. If you're wondering how to bleed the radiators yourself, read on.

Find the Problem

Firstly, to bleed a radiator, you need to diagnose the problem.  All system occasionally require bleeding and there's a few signs that your radiators might need bleeding. For example, if you notice cold spots on your radiators or maybe they're just taking longer and longer to warm up, this could also be sign.

Check The Radiators

After you realise that it may be the case that the radiators need bleeding, you should fire up the central heating system and asses each radiator; make sure to check for inconsistencies with the warmth.

Turn off The Heating

This point is crucial, as the result of not making sure you've turned off your heating before bleeding a radiator could mean a lot of water on the floor.

Release The Air

Now that the heating is off, reach for a radiator key (you can purchase a radiator key from your local DIY shop) and a rag before fitting the key to the valve at the top of your radiator. Once you've done this, use a rag to catch the drips and the other rag to protect your hands. Finally, start to slowly twist the key anti-clockwise to release the air.

Shut The Valve

You should now hear air escaping, once this lessens, water will be moving towards the hole, at which you should promptly do the valve up to prevent water from going everywhere.

Check The Pressure

Finally, once this all done, you should check the pressure gauge on the boiler. If you notice that the pressure is too low after you've bled the radiator or radiators, you'll need to top it up. To do this, adjust using the filling loop, with instructions from your boiler manufacture
