More Boiler Maintenance Tips for Your Boiler in Stourbridge

We recently wrote a post sharing top maintenance tips for caring for your boiler. This is a follow-up, offering you a few more hints and top tips to help keep your central heating system running smoothly for longer. Your boiler needs looking after, just like your car, and by following this simple guide you’ll help keep it healthy.

Ventilate your boiler

Often boilers are placed in cupboards in your home and it can be tempting to fill the space around it with towels, coats, bags and other clutter. While we appreciate the need for storage, boilers need to breathe and stashing stuff around them stops them from getting the ventilation they require to work properly. Remove any clutter from around your boiler so that it can breathe and do its job properly.

Repressurise your boiler

You may have read last time that if the pressure in your boiler is too high your radiators may need bleeding. But sometimes the pressure in your boiler can drop too low. To check yours, look for the pressure gauge on your boiler and see where the needle sits. If the pressure is healthy it should be between 1 and 1.5 but if it’s lower than this it will need repressurising. You can do this yourself via the filling loop, or contact a Gas Safe registered engineer if you aren’t sure how to do it or don’t have your manual.

Turn your boiler on

While you naturally want to save energy and money in summer by turning your boiler off, make sure every few weeks you turn it back on for half an hour or so. Similar to a car, you don’t want your boiler sitting idle for too long and then having trouble switching back on when you actually need it!

Buy a carbon monoxide detector

These small units are inexpensive and detect any carbon monoxide leaks from your boiler or other gas appliances. Doing this could quite literally save your life, as carbon monoxide cannot be seen or smelt, but is an extremely dangerous gas.

Dust your boiler

You shouldn’t clean the inside parts of your boiler as you risk damage and also your safety (boilers can be hot!). This will be done as part of your yearly boiler service. You can, however, clean around the outside of your boiler regularly with a dusting cloth, as this will help your boiler keep clean from debris and perform better.
