When Do I Need an Emergency Plumber?

Whether it’s a leaky tap or a broken shower, we all rely on our plumbing to work effectively and when it doesn’t it can be a real pain to deal with. However, in the case of an emergency plumbing issue, it can feel even worse and you can’t choose to put the work off as it will need to be dealt with straight away. This could be because the plumbing issue is putting you or others in danger, or it could be because it’s causing damage to your home.

What is a plumbing emergency?

Plumbers do so many different jobs connected to the water in your home, but plumbing issues that are considered an emergency usually mean they require immediate attention.

This includes issues such as a burst pipe, boiler breakdown, broken toilet and water leak - basically something that makes your home very uncomfortable or is causing damage or danger.

You may experience other plumbing issues over the years that you would like sorting quickly, but that aren’t actually emergencies. These include leaking taps, poor water pressure, a loose toilet and radiators not fully heating. In these cases, you can call or email your plumber to arrange an advance appointment. A good plumber will always try to slot you in as quickly as possible, as we understand how inconvenient it is when something in your home isn’t working as it should be.

Can I manage a plumbing emergency by myself?

We wouldn’t usually advise this, not because we’re plumbers and want the work ourselves, but because it can be dangerous and cause further damage. There are definitely some plumbing issues that the average homeowner can look into themselves, and if it’s something you can quickly and easily resolve without calling out a plumber then it definitely makes sense to try first. This might be something like a blocked shower tray or an easy-to-access cistern part that needs replacing. Jobs like this sometimes can be done easily by yourself, just with a trip to your local diy store and by carefully following instructions.

However, plumbing emergencies can often lead to damage in your home, so if you have a burst pipe then it really doesn’t make sense to tackle it unless you have the right skills, experience and tools. Similarly, if the problem relates to your gas boiler, only a Gas Safe registered engineer should investigate it. With boilers, it’s often hard to know what has caused the issue, and while it could be something small, the reality is your boiler may have stopped working due to a build-up of gas. This is obviously extremely dangerous, so only a Gas Safe registered heating engineer, who has the right qualifications, should inspect your boiler.

If in doubt about carrying out a repair or fiddling with the plumbing in your home, always call your local trusted plumber or qualified heating engineer.
