When is it Cheaper to Replace or Repair Your Boiler?

There’s never a good time for your boiler to break down. Because we rely on our boilers so much - for heat, hot water and comfort, it can feel like a real disaster when something goes wrong.

Some boiler problems are quite simple to resolve and a Gas Safe Registered engineer can carry out the repair quickly. This means your boiler will be restored to its former glory and you’ll be reunited with the heat and hot water you’ve come to rely on.

Other times, however, boiler problems are more complex and in some cases difficult or impossible to repair. So there may come a time when, instead of having your boiler repaired, you need to think about having a new one installed.

If your boiler has been misbehaving, the following guide may be useful in helping you work out whether it’s cheaper to replace or repair it.

When to get your boiler repaired

Even the best boilers go wrong sometimes. Parts wear out over time, or niggly issues cause downtime but can be easily resolved. Your boiler can probably be repaired if:

  • It’s under 8 or 9 years old

  • It rarely needs repairing

  • It’s still working well but you’ve picked up a single issue, such as loud noises

  • Your boiler still works but the radiators are cold (this could be a thermostat problem, which is simple to replace)

  • Your boiler and radiators work but are slow to heat (you may just need to bleed your radiators or arrange a powerflush)

  • There are no leaks

When to have your boiler replaced

There are few hard and fast rules here, but the following signs may well mean it’s time to consider having a new boiler installed:

  • It needs regular repairs (the cost of these can soon mount up to the price of a new boiler!)

  • There’s a safety risk to you and your family, such as a gas leak

  • It’s near or over 10 years old and has broken down

  • Replacement parts are difficult and costly to source for the repair

  • It is leaking a lot

Your energy bills are higher than average. This, coupled with a boiler breakdown, may make a boiler replacement a better option as newer boilers are much more energy-efficient and will reduce your bills
