Can Replacing Your Boiler Help Reduce Your Carbon Footprint?

There’s no ignoring the fact that the Earth is suffering an extreme energy crisis. While we have all become accustomed to using energy in our daily lives as it brings so much comfort and convenience to us, we all have a responsibility to change our ways and reduce our carbon footprints.

We can do this in many different ways, depending on our personal circumstances. For example, some people are choosing to fly less or even simply walk or cycle to work instead of driving. Others are cutting back on meat and in some cases going all out and becoming vegan. We can all do our bit, and one thing almost everyone has in common is using energy at home.

From switching on a light to running a bath to using the oven, we all need energy. One of the things at home that produces the most CO2 emissions, however, is our boilers.

If you’re considering replacing your boiler, you may be wondering if doing so will help you reduce your carbon footprint. We explain more about how it can help lower your energy use below.

How replacing your boiler reduces your carbon footprint

Boiler technology has developed a lot in recent years, and in part as a response to the energy crisis, boiler manufacturers are designing their units with energy-efficiency in mind. Boilers are rated A through to G for energy, and if you replace your current boiler with an A-rated one, it will be much more energy-efficient and reduce your carbon footprint as a result.

The less energy you use, the fewer CO2 emissions are released into the Earth’s atmosphere, so a new boiler really can make a difference to the planet.

The Energy Saving Trust, who have been promoting the effectiveness of energy-efficient boilers, estimate that if the whole of the UK replaced their old boiler with an A-rated condensing unit, and gave more thought to how they used energy, around 6.7 million less tonnes of CO2 gases would be produced. This is an absolutely huge number, and shows how, if we all work together, we can have a massively positive impact on the global drive to reduce CO2.

How to reduce energy use in your home

As well as your boiler, there are a lot of things in your home that require energy and can have a negative impact on the environment as a result. So while we’d be happy to support you with reducing your carbon footprint by switching to an energy-efficient boiler, there are other things you can do alongside this that can make a real difference. The best approach is to aim to reduce your energy use in as many ways as you can, as this will have the biggest impact on the energy crisis.

It doesn’t have to be complicated or costly either. In fact, reducing your energy use can reduce your energy bills which will actually save you money!

You can start this straight away, simply by being more mindful of the energy you use. For example, switching lights off when you leave the room and turning radiators down in parts of the house you don’t use much will make a difference.

Many people choose to have a Smart meter installed, which your energy provider will usually install. This can really help you track your energy use and inspire you to lower your use.

You can also:

  • Lower your thermostat so you still enjoy heat but at a lower temperature
  • Shorten the length of your showers by a minute or two
  • Switch your heating off completely on milder days

And if you did want to invest in reducing your carbon footprint, there are some other things you can consider to make a bigger difference:

  • Have solar panels installed
  • Replace your washing machine with a more energy-efficient model
  • Replace your dishwasher to a more energy-efficient model
